OpenSCAD v.2021.01

OpenSCAD is a free script-based 3D CAD editor for Windows that creates models from text commands rather than direct mouse manipulation. Its language describes geometric primitives, transformations and relationships, allowing a design to be rebuilt from editable parameters. The program is suited to precise parts for 3D printing, technical prototypes and repeatable variations of the same object.

OpenSCAD offers a different workflow from Fusion 360. Fusion 360 provides interactive sketching, direct solid editing, assembly tools and an integrated CAM environment, while OpenSCAD concentrates on code-driven constructive solid geometry. In OpenSCAD, a change to a variable or module can regenerate the whole model, but the editor does not provide Fusion 360’s graphical tools for shaping a part by dragging faces or preparing machining operations.

The program combines a code editor with a 3D preview, so the model’s source remains visible alongside its geometric result. This approach is especially practical when a part must be reproduced with altered dimensions or shared as a compact, readable design file.

• Learning the OpenSCAD language takes time, especially for users accustomed to conventional CAD interfaces.
• Complex source files can become difficult to maintain when modules are poorly structured or contain many nested transformations.
• The program is not intended to replace a full mechanical CAD suite with built-in assembly design or CAM preparation.
• Preview and final rendering can behave differently in demanding scenes, so geometry may require an additional render check before export.

OpenSCAD is most convincing when accuracy, repeatability and control over the model’s construction matter more than freehand shaping. A coded enclosure, mounting plate or replacement part can be edited long after creation without reconstructing its geometry from scratch.
