Brawl Stars is a fast-paced multiplayer game for Android from Supercell, combining elements of a shooter and a MOBA in short, three-minute matches. The game was released in 2018 and quickly racked up hundreds of millions of downloads thanks to its accessible gameplay and variety of game modes. Each match is a clash between teams or individual players in compact arenas, where victory depends on the ability to manoeuvre and choose the right character for a specific situation.
Gameplay
Controls are based on two virtual joysticks: the left one controls movement, the right one controls the direction of attack. The main objective is to fulfil the victory condition within the allotted time: eliminate more opponents, collect and hold onto resources, score a goal, or be the last one standing. Each brawler has a standard attack, a super ability that charges up with successful hits, and an additional gadget. Matches are short, so the pace remains intense from the first second to the final whistle. Between battles, players unlock new characters, upgrade their stats and collect cosmetic skins.
Game modes
Brawl Stars offers a rotation of modes that is updated daily. Among the permanently available modes are the team battle ‘Gem Grab’, where you must collect and hold ten gems, and ‘Brawl Ball’, which resembles football with shooting. Also worth mentioning is ‘Showdown’ — a classic 10-player battle royale, available in both solo and duo modes. Limited-time events with unique rules appear periodically, ensuring the content never gets stale.
Characters and progression
The roster features over seventy brawlers, each belonging to a specific class — from tanks to snipers. New heroes are unlocked via in-game chests or by completing the seasonal Brawl Pass. Each character has two Star Powers to choose from and a couple of gadgets that significantly influence tactics. The progression system is designed so that the main resources for levelling up are available without spending real money, although progress slows down noticeably in the later stages.
Features
- Short matches lasting up to three minutes, which fit easily into any schedule
- Regular updates with new brawlers and seasonal events
- A club system that lets you play with friends and take part in the club league
- Intuitive touch controls, tailored specifically for mobile devices
- Vibrant visual style with recognisable cartoon character designs
Advantages
- Low barrier to entry — the basic mechanics can be mastered in just a few matches
- Small download size compared to other multiplayer projects of a similar scale
- Stable performance even on budget devices with 2 GB of RAM
- An active esports scene with official tournaments organised by the developer
Disadvantages
- Character balance is sometimes disrupted after a new brawler is released, and patches can take weeks to arrive
- The matchmaking system at high ranks often results in uneven teams
- Progress without in-game purchases slows down in the later stages, creating a noticeable gap between paying and free players
- Lack of a full-fledged single-player mode — a stable internet connection is required for a comfortable gaming experience
Brawl Stars remains one of the few mobile shooters where a three-month-old newbie can go head-to-head with a veteran — provided they choose the right brawler and read the map correctly. It is precisely this tactical depth, hidden beneath the bright exterior, that keeps players engaged for much longer than one might expect from a game with three-minute matches.
