PUBG MOBILE is the mobile version of the iconic battle royale shooter for Android, which retains the core formula of the original: one hundred players are dropped onto a vast map, gather weapons and equipment, and then fight for survival until the very end. The game was developed by Lightspeed & Quantum with support from Krafton and, since its launch in 2018, has become one of the most popular mobile games in the world, racking up over a billion downloads.
Gameplay
The match begins with a flight over the selected map. Each player chooses their own drop zone, jumps out with a parachute and, from the moment they hit the ground, begins searching for resources — weapons, body armour, first-aid kits and ammunition. The play area gradually shrinks, forcing players to move towards the safe zone and inevitably encounter opponents. The winner is the last one standing — either a solo player or a team. A single round usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, although an aggressive playstyle can shorten this time.
Features
- Several large maps — Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Vikendi, Livik — each with unique landscapes and tactical features
- Game modes to choose from: solo, duo and squads of four, as well as special arcade modes with modified rules
- A wide arsenal of firearms and melee weapons, with the option to attach sights, silencers, extended magazines and other attachments
- Vehicles — from cars to motorboats — allowing you to move quickly across the map
- A ranking system that categorises players by skill level, from Bronze to the coveted Conqueror
- Regular themed seasons with new rewards, skins and collaborations
- Voice chat for coordinating team actions
- Flexible control settings: you can choose between on-screen buttons or connect a gamepad
Pros
- The graphics quality is impressive for a mobile platform — detailed textures, dynamic lighting and weather effects create an atmosphere close to the PC version
- Optimised for various devices: the game runs even on budget smartphones thanks to quality settings ranging from ‘smooth’ to ‘HDR’
- Free-to-play model with no pay-to-win elements — microtransactions are limited to cosmetic items that do not affect the game balance
- Stable network code and fast matchmaking in most regions
- An anti-cheat system that is constantly updated to combat cheaters
Cons
- Significant battery drain — a long gaming session can drain the device in a couple of hours even on medium graphics settings
- The game size, including additional resources, exceeds several gigabytes, which causes issues on devices with limited storage
- Bots in the early ranks — new players initially play mainly against AI, which can give a false impression of their own skill level
- Despite the developers’ efforts, cheaters are still found on some servers, particularly in higher-ranked lobbies
- An aggressive monetisation system for cosmetic items via loot boxes with a low chance of obtaining rare rewards
Modes beyond the classic battle royale
In addition to the standard survival competition, PUBG MOBILE offers arcade variations — War Mode with instant respawns, and Payload Mode featuring heavy weaponry such as grenade launchers and anti-aircraft missiles. Limited-time modes appear periodically, tied to seasonal events or collaborations with well-known franchises. This approach adds variety and prevents the gameplay from becoming monotonous, even for those who play daily over a long period.
PUBG MOBILE remains the benchmark for the battle royale genre on mobile devices, and every major update — be it a new map or a rework of the ballistics model — confirms that the developers continue to invest in the project’s development, rather than simply capitalising on its popularity.
