Hair Challenge is a casual arcade game for Android built around an unusual mechanic: collecting and growing hair as your character moves along the track. Developed by Zynga, this game offers minimalist yet engaging gameplay that combines elements of a runner and a puzzle game. The game quickly gained popularity thanks to its simple controls and visually amusing concept, which feels fresh even amidst the sea of hyper-casual games.
Gameplay
The essence of the gameplay boils down to guiding the character along a linear level featuring various obstacles and bonuses. The main task is to collect special items that lengthen the heroine’s hair, whilst avoiding objects that shorten it. Controls are handled by swiping left and right, allowing you to manoeuvre between obstacles. At the end of each level, the length of the collected hair is converted into points and also determines the character’s final appearance. Between levels, you can customise the hairstyle and colour.
Game features
- Dozens of levels with progressively more challenging courses and an increasing number of obstacles
- A customisation system that allows you to change hair colour and hairstyle
- Bonus zones at the end of levels where you can multiply your points
- Simple and intuitive one-finger control system
- Vibrant low-poly graphics that don’t require a powerful device
Advantages
- An original concept that sets the game apart from typical runners
- Instant start — it takes just a few seconds from loading to the first level
- Small installation file size and minimal system requirements
- Suitable for short gaming sessions, for example on public transport or whilst queuing
Disadvantages
- Advertisements appear after every level and significantly disrupt the flow of the game
- The gameplay becomes repetitive after the first ten levels — the game adds almost no new mechanics
- Limited customisation options without watching adverts
- Lack of a storyline and any motivation other than scoring points
Visuals and sound
Hair Challenge’s graphic style is based on bright pastel colours and simplified 3D models. The animation of hair blowing in the wind whilst running is quite convincing for a casual game and adds a comical effect. The soundtrack is minimal — the background music is unobtrusive, and sound effects are limited to short beeps when collecting items and colliding with obstacles.
Hair Challenge remains a typical representative of the hyper-casual genre: the game doesn’t claim to be deep, but it confidently occupies its niche — quick entertainment without the need to delve into complex rules. The main problem lies in the aggressive monetisation through adverts, which can completely ruin the enjoyment of the gameplay.
