Among Us is a multiplayer online game for Android, centred around social deduction and teamwork. The project by InnerSloth was released back in 2018, but it only gained real popularity two years later, when streamers and YouTubers turned it into a cultural phenomenon. The game invites between 4 and 15 players to figure out who the imposter is whilst the spaceship flies into the unknown. Simple mechanics are combined here with the depth of psychological gameplay — and that is precisely what makes Among Us so addictive.
Gameplay
At the start of a round, each player is randomly assigned a role — crewmate or imposter. Crewmates carry out mini-tasks on the map: connecting wires, downloading data, cleaning filters. Meanwhile, the imposter quietly eliminates crewmates one by one, sabotages the ship’s systems and tries not to arouse suspicion. When someone finds a body or presses the emergency meeting button, a discussion begins — players use text chat or voice chat to try to figure out who the traitor is, after which they vote to expel the suspect. The round ends in victory for the crew if all tasks are completed or the imposter is expelled, whilst the imposter wins when the number of living crew members equals the number of imposters.
Features
- Support for online matches with random players and private lobbies to play with friends using a room code
- Cross-platform compatibility — Android players can play alongside PC and iOS users
- Several maps with different room layouts: The Skeld, MIRA HQ, Polus, The Airship and Fungle
- Flexible lobby settings: number of impostors, movement speed, discussion duration, view range
- Cosmetic items system — hats, skins, pets and visors to personalise your character
- Additional roles (engineer, scientist, guardian angel, phantom ghost) expand tactical possibilities
Pros
- Low barrier to entry — you can grasp the rules within the first round without reading any instructions
- Minimal system requirements allow the game to run even on older devices
- Free-to-play model on Android with no need to pay for basic access
- Short sessions of 5–10 minutes fit well with the mobile format
- The game encourages lively interaction and emotional discussions that go far beyond the screen
Drawbacks
- Advertisements in the free version appear between rounds and can be annoying during long gaming sessions
- Text chat on mobile devices is awkward due to the small keyboard — voice chat via third-party apps works much better
- In public lobbies, players often leave the game immediately after being assigned a crew role
- Touchscreen controls are sometimes less precise than a mouse, particularly when performing certain mini-tasks
- Content updates are released irregularly, and there are long gaps between major updates
Visual style and atmosphere
The graphics in Among Us are deliberately simplified — the characters resemble colourful capsules on legs, and the spaceship interiors are rendered in a minimalist 2D style. This is not a flaw, but part of the concept: the cartoonish look reduces the tension of situations involving murder and betrayal, and makes the game accessible to a wide audience. The soundtrack is minimal — a few distinctive beeps for meetings and sabotage, and an eerie ambient track playing in the background. All the tension is created not by audiovisual means, but by the interactions between people.
Who it’s for
Among Us is at its best when played with friends, as voice chat turns every discussion into a mini-detective story complete with accusations and alibis. Playing with random people has its own appeal too, although the level of communication is noticeably lower. For solo players looking for a deep narrative or complex progression, this game is unlikely to become a long-term favourite — there’s no character levelling or story campaigns, and its entire value rests on the human factor and the ability to read the intentions of your conversation partners.
