Temple Run 2 is a thrilling running game for Android, offering an endless dash through exotic locations featuring ancient temples, suspension bridges and perilous cliffs. The game is a sequel to the original Temple Run and significantly expands on the formula of the first instalment with improved graphics, new mechanics and varied environments. Developed by Imangi Studios, it has remained one of the most popular mobile games in the endless runner genre for over a decade.
Gameplay
The essence of the game boils down to the character’s continuous run forward along the winding paths of the temple complex. Controls are via swipes: horizontal gestures turn the character left or right at junctions, swiping up makes them jump, and swiping down makes them slide under obstacles. Tilting the device allows you to move the character along the path, collecting coins and bonuses. The route is procedurally generated, so every attempt is different from the last. As you progress, the speed increases and the obstacles become denser and more treacherous — a single misstep means the end of the run.
Features
- Several themed locations — from snow-capped mountain peaks to tropical forests and volcanic landscapes, each with its own visual style and unique obstacles
- A character system with individual abilities, unlocked using in-game currency or by completing tasks
- Weekly and seasonal challenges that give you a reason to return to the game regularly
- A set of power-ups — shield, coin magnet, speed boost and double points — each of which can be levelled up
- Global leaderboards and achievements via Google Play Games
- A goal system — step-by-step missions, completing which increases the score multiplier
Advantages
- Intuitive controls that require no learning curve — it takes just a few seconds to grasp the basic mechanics
- High-quality visuals for a mobile runner: detailed textures, dynamic lighting and smooth animations
- The game does not require a constant internet connection, allowing you to play on the underground or whilst travelling
- Small download size and modest system requirements — runs even on budget devices
- Regular updates with new content, released for years after launch
Cons
- Advertisements appear quite frequently, especially after the end of each run, and can significantly disrupt the flow of the game
- Leveling up characters and unlocking new heroes without spending real money requires a significant amount of time and patience
- The gameplay becomes predictable over time — despite procedural generation, the range of obstacles and patterns is limited
- Some cosmetic items and characters are available exclusively for premium currency, which creates a sense of artificial restrictions
Temple Run 2 strikes a good balance between simplicity and depth: each run lasts from thirty seconds to several minutes, but the progression system and the desire to beat your own record create that very loop of engagement that makes you hit the restart button again and again.
